The Witching Hour Sessions – UK Folk Music

The Witching Hour Sessions – 12/06/2017.

Oysterband.

I like a very broad selection of musical genres which means I’m no authority in any of them! Like good food there’s too much quality fare out there to be stuck in and only sampling the one type. So a bit of top class UK folk for tonight’s late night listening.

Oysterband ‘Granite Years’ (2000)

Excellent compilation of Oyster Bands highlights from between 1977 – 1986. The anti-Thatcher years.

Nic Jones ‘Penguin Eggs’ (1980)

Nic was one of the leading folk guitarist, fiddle players and also a fine singer in the 1970s and in great demand as a session player. However a dreadful car crash in 1982 virtually finished Nic Jones’s career.
Thankfully he got to make ‘Penguin Eggs’ one of the greatest ever UK folk albums. Just go buy it!

Maddy Prior and June Tabor ‘Silly Sisters’ (1976).

Mainly duets of traditional material but a must have in any collection of folk music.

(BTW – The good news; they are starting to wean me off the steroids next week so sleep will hopefully make it’s way back fairly soon. The bad news; it could take 3/4 weeks to get back to normal sleep patterns so you will be stuck with The Witching Hour Sessions for at least another couple of weeks 😩)
